Kinesio-taping (KT)

What is Kinesio-taping?

Kinesiology tape is a thinner and more elastic tape than conventional tape and can be worn for many days, providing support and therapeutic benefits 24/7. It is applied over and around the contours of muscles and associated joints, the amount of stretch differs depending on the purpose of its application.

Injuries or trauma to the body set off a protective mechanism, the inflammatory response. Signs of inflammation include, pain, swelling, heat and redness and usually some restriction in movement. Correct application of kinesiology tape aims to alleviate pain and encourage lymphatic drainage by microscopically lifting the skin allowing a decrease in the inflammatory process on the affected areas.

What can we treat ?

Despite claims of functional benefits of kinesio tape application, little evidence exists to support the physiological pathways to achieve these benefits. However in clinic our patients have found it beneficial for back and neck pain, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow and knee pain, where we use it as an adjunct to chiropractic and/or acupuncture treatment.

How many sessions will I need

We use kinesio tape as an adjunct to chiropractic or acupuncture treatment. We also encourage the use of tape at home. So as long as you are finding it helpful, the frequency of taping is largely up to you with advice from us.

How will I feel after treatment?

Hopefully easier! The tape gives good support without constricting.

Penny administered some acupuncture and then used kinesiology tape which worked wonders.
The tape supported my foot but allowed total movement and did not feel restrictive in any
way.
