What is McTimoney Chiropractic?
Developed by John McTimoney over 30 years ago, the McTimoney method is recognized as being a gentle, precise, whole body approach to chiropractic care. We are trained to correct misalignments using quick, gentle and accurate adjustments, which ensure you experience maximum comfort. We strive for optimal health by treating the entire person and not just the area that pains you.
Improving the health of the Nation
This technique has helped thousands of people for over 30 years and around 150,000 new patients consult a McTimoney Chiropractor each year. Over 8000 people are cared for by McTimoney Chiropractors each working day.
What causes a problem in the first place?
All sorts of things as we go about our life, like incorrect lifting, car or sport accidents, falls, stress, poor posture, illness and everyday wear and tear.
What can a chiropractor help me with?
The gentle nature of this technique makes it suitable for people of all ages and is proven to be effective in treating the following conditions:
Back, neck and shoulder pain, pain, discomfort and stiffness in joints, migraines, headaches, muscular aches, sports injuries and arthritic pain.
Our aim is to reduce your discomfort and help your body back to optimal function. This is likely to include advice on lifestyle, posture and exercises.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of treatments varies and progress depends on the extent and duration of your injury, your general fitness, and posture and stress levels
Usually the longer you have had it, the longer it takes to get better, and generally the younger you are the quicker you heal. Most people need 3-6 treatments, however, progress depends on the nature of your injury and how willing you are to make any lifestyle changes that we discuss. Once you’re up and running, you can choose to schedule regular check-ups a few times a year to keep chronic conditions under control.
What can I expect from my first visit?
We allow 45-60 minutes for your first visit and ask you to complete a few details on a patient record card. During your consultation we will discuss your general health and medical history, your symptoms and lifestyle. With your permission, we will carry out an examination of your joints and muscles (which may include neurological and orthopaedic tests where necessary). We discuss what we consider to be the underlying problem behind your symptoms and a treatment plan is agreed. In most cases you will receive a treatment at your first visit. Treatment is very much a partnership between the practitioner and the patient. If at any point we discover or suspect a condition that requires medical intervention, we will refer you to your GP for further tests.
Our first concern is to find out what is wrong. We will also check for signs of any serious conditions for which you would need specialist advice. In some instances, we may need to ask you to remove some clothing. Privacy and a gown are always provided but do tell us if you feel uncomfortable about undressing.
How will I feel after treatment?
During a course of chiropractic care you may feel physical changes as your body realigns. These can include stiffness or tiredness, particularly after your first session. We will give you advice on aftercare and any necessary lifestyle changes to help you get the most out of your care. It is important that you talk to your chiropractor if you feel worried about anything either during or after treatment.
